Module 8: Public Speaking (Students present a three-minute presentation to class and learn the art of speaking in front of an audience with confidence and eye contact.)

  • It is important to note that the fear of public speaking tops the greatest fears that trouble people according to a popular survey. In fact, this fear charges ahead of people’s fear of death, spiders, heights and confined spaces demonstrating that people feel public speaking is a greater torture than any of these, including death itself.
  • 3 out of every 4 people, or 75%, have speech anxiety, which negatively impacts the individual when delivering a speech in a public setting.

  • “The biggest fear is public speaking, with 15 percent of American experiencing a dramatic fear of it,” said Dr. Michael Telch of the Laboratory for the Study of Anxiety Disorders (LSAD) in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. “People have had to turn down jobs, and certainly students have dropped classes because of it.”
